Are you looking for an easy way to try new wines from around the world? A wine of the month club might be exactly what you’re looking for?

With many of these companies offering monthly deliveries of curated wines, you can try new reds, whites, blends, and more without ever having to leave the comfort of your own home or take a wild guess at your local wine store. It can be a great way to expand your palette, have some wine for regular get togethers with friends, or just drink and explore new wines by yourself.

However, with so many wine clubs to choose from, it can be pretty tough to decide which one is right for you. Not all wine clubs are created equal. In fact, there are a lot of wine clubs that are nothing more than just ways for companies to clear out all the old wine that they have.

To help you make the right decision when choosing a club, we’re sharing everything you need to know about 24 of the best wine clubs that are currently available.

1. Winc

YouTube player
  • Starting Price: $13 per bottle
  • Shipping: Free
  • Grade: A+

Winc was founded back in 2012 by Xander Oxman and Geoff McFarlane. Striving for a way to make wine more accessible to consumers, they teamed up with a sommelier named Brian Smith. Together, they crafted Winc, their monthly wine club that delivers a selection of wines based on your personal tastes.

To ensure you receive wines you’ll love, you are prompted to take a six-question quiz that they’ve created. This allows Winc to learn about your personal taste preferences so they can send wines that are specifically chosen to match your palate. Once you start receiving wines and tasting them, you can add a rating on their website. Those ratings help them to provide even better recommendations for you.

Your monthly order starts at just $13, which gets you four bottles of wine. The exact price you pay each month will vary though. Sometimes you will receive more expensive wines, which will increase the price a bit. There are also local tax rates you’ll have to pay as well.

2. The California Wine Club

  • Starting Price: $19.98 per bottle
  • Shipping: $14 to most states
  • Grade: B+

What makes The California Wine Club special is that they’re focused on small, family wineries throughout California. They’ve been doing so since 1990, when the company was founded by Bruce and Pam Boring.

Each month, they hand-select a variety of wines from small vineyards around the state and they’re delivered right to your door.

There’s no quiz to complete or anything like that. You’re simply putting your trust into the experts behind The California Wine Club. However, you are able to choose between red and white wine or a combination of both. They also have a “Love It Guarantee,” which allows you to replace a bottle that just wasn’t your personal tastes.

To get started, you’ll have to choose between their five different wine club levels. The Premier Series starts at $39.95, the Signature Series starts at $134, the International Series starts at $71, the Aged Cabernet Series starts at $231, and the Pacific Northwest Series starts at $77.

3. Bright Cellars

Bright Cellars
  • Starting Price: $15 per bottle
  • Shipping: $8
  • Grade: A

Founded in 2014, Richard Yau and Joe Laurendi created Bright Cellars from their own passion for wine. It’s a monthly wine club that is curated to your own tastes and then delivered to you. You’ll be able to try a variety of wines without ever having to leave the comfort of your own home.

To ensure you receive a selection of wines that suits your tastes, there’s a quiz you’ll have to complete before placing your first order. You’ll be asked questions that may seem silly but actually help them understand your taste preferences. For example, there are questions about your chocolate preferences, how you like your tea, and where you like to drink your wine. All of this helps them select the wines you’re much more likely to fall in love with. Like Winc, you’ll have the ability to rate the wines you receive, which will also help to better match you with the right wines in the future.

Your monthly order from Bright Cellars will get you four bottles of wine. This will cost you $60 per box to receive wines from all around the world.

4. WSJwine

To make sure you receive wines that suit your tastes, you can choose between a box of all red wine, just white wine, or a mixture of both. You can share which wine styles you like and which ones you don’t like to customize the box to your palate. However, if there’s ever something you don’t like, they provide a 100% satisfaction guarantee that promises a full refund.

You can get started with WSJwine for just $69.99 for 15 bottles. However, the price increases to $149.99 after the first order.

It provided a wine for wineries to sell their wine, while consumers get access to quality bottles for a lower cost.

Today, 90+ Cellars works with wineries and vineyard from around the globe to bring their customers the best value possible. Cellars Wine Club
  • Starting Price: $29 per bottle

Cellars Wine Club was founded in Washington state in 1999 by husband and wife duo, Mark Ihrig and Holly Ihrig. To ensure your order best suits your needs, there are a variety of subscriptions you can choose from. There’s no quiz to complete or anything like that for them to select your wines.

12. Wine Library

Wine Library
  • Starting Price: $55 per month (amount of bottles sent varies each month)
  • Shipping: Free
  • Grade: A

For those in the entrepreneurial world, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Gary Vaynerchuk. He started out working in his father’s brick-and-mortar wine shop in his teenage years and ultimately took the business online and majorly increased the amount of profit the business brought in. Now, he’s started the Gary Vee Monthly Wine Club through his father’s business, Wine Library.

You can receive one, two, three, or four bottles of wine with each delivery, depending on the month. Although what’s inside the box will change, the value will always be there. Gary has been able to secure 50% off or more of the combined retail price of the bottles of wine they offer.

You can get it for just $50 per month, which allows you to try new wines and see what you like. Each month, there will be a new wine tasting video that features Gary talking about the wines in your delivery.

13. Vinebox

Vinebox
  • Starting Price: $8.33 per “vile” (not a full bottle of wine)
  • Shipping: Free
  • Grade: A-

When it comes to trying wines, the last thing anyone wants to do is purchase a bottle only to find they absolutely hate it. Vinebox offers a solution to that. Instead of going out and purchasing a full bottle or having multiple bottles delivered to you, you’ll receive wines by the glass. With a single serving of wine, you’re able to try it without the waste.

To ensure you receive wines that you’ll enjoy, Vinebox has created a quiz to learn all about your preferences. They’ll then curate wines based on your palate and send them to you by the glass. Each month, you’ll receive three or six different wines to try. By rating and reviewing each wine you receive, your monthly order gets even more tailored to your tastes. And if you find something you love, you can purchase full-size bottles directly from Vine Box.

The only negative is that the “viles” they send the wine in are very small and only fill about half of a regular wine glass. At $8.33 per glass of wine, this makes it a pretty expensive wine club.

Benefits of Joining a Wine of the Month Club

There are a number of great monthly wine subscriptions on the market right now — our favorites covered above. Each one promises to deliver great wines straight to your doorstep, while allowing you to experience new flavors from all around the world. However, joining a wine club may or may not be the right decision. Let’s cover the top benefits of joining a wine of the month club and see if it aligns with what you’re looking for…

You’ll Receive Discounts on Your Wine

You’re going to receive a great deal on wine when you join a monthly club. That’s one of their main selling points and really the selling point of buying “in bulk”. Many of these businesses (like Winc and Empathy Wines) are often working directly with the winemakers to cut out the middle man, which ultimately lowers the cost for you without sacrificing quality. Your wine isn’t going from the vineyard to a distributor and then onto a retailer before it makes its way to you. Remember, at each of those steps, the wine gets marked up. Many wine clubs listed here are getting the wine from the vineyard and shipping it straight to your door. Plus, they may have extra incentives when joining that also keep the cost down for you. For instance, with a company like Empathy Wines, the more wine you buy from them, the more savings you’ll actually receive. Being a member can also get you exclusive invites to parties hosted by the company, which is a huge bonus.

You’ll Gain Access to Online-Only Bottles of Wine

Want to impress everyone with incredible wine that you can’t find at your local wine store? Well, that’s just another benefit of joining a wine of the month club. You’ll gain access to online-only wine that wouldn’t otherwise be accessible to you. It’s the perfect way to fill your wine fridge with all kinds of different varieties and feel like a VIP at the same time.

It’s a Great Opportunity to Expand Your Wine Knowledge

If you’ve been dreaming of becoming a wine connoisseur of sorts, a wine of the month club is a great way to do it. When you go to your local liquor store and pick up a bottle of wine, you aren’t really learning anything about it. Very rarely do they include much information about the wine, vineyard, location, history, etc. Plus, there’s no one to tell you what food the wine pairs well with! Let’s be honest, that’s half the fun of drinking wine anyway!

The great thing about these monthly clubs is that many of them provide incredibly detailed information about the wines you receive. You’ll not only get to learn about the wine and the vineyard (helping you to get to know your wine even better) they also provide information for flavor pairings, you can impress all of your friends and family on your next dinner night with the perfect wine and meal pairing.

Winc does this really well (which is why it’s one of our favorites)! They feature small-lot wines from around the world and work directly with the vineyards and winemakers whose products they offer. Each month, they include information like the story behind each bottle, as well as additional wine knowledge you can share with others.

You Can Explore Different Wines

Let’s face it… We are creatures of habit. And typically when we find a favorite food, drink, or anything else of the sort, we stick with it. Think about it for a second. Do you tend to order the same few dishes when you go to your favorite restaurant? I do! Is there a go-to drink you always have on your nights out with the girls? Probably!

I’m guessing the same thing likely happens when you go out to pick up a bottle of wine. You might buy the same ones over and over again because you know you like them. While there’s no chance you’ll be let down, doesn’t that get kind of boring after a while? Wouldn’t it be nice to be a bit more adventurous with your wine selection?

By joining a wine club, you’ll have the ability to explore a variety of unique wines. You’ll have the opportunity to try different types from various locations around the world. It’s a fantastic opportunity to find new favorites you can bring into your wine collection or just have a fun time drinking them. The best part is that you can do so without breaking the bank since these clubs typically offer a good deal.

They Help You Find New Favorites

Another thing to keep in mind is that these services normally create a flavor profile for you. Many of them have some sort of introductory quiz that helps their algorithm figure out what kinds of wine you’d be most interested in. Then, you can rate the ones you receive afterwards so they get to know your preferences even better. This helps cut down on your chances of receiving something you’d dislike and increasing the odds you’ll be sent something that matches your flavor profile perfectly.

Firstleaf is designed in exactly this way. You take a quiz to determine your flavor profile, then they send you an introductory set of wines. From there, you use their rating system to share your feedback. By doing so, you improve each box you receive in the future as they get to know more about your preferences. Simple, but effective!

It’s a Great Excuse to Have Family & Friends Over

Sometimes we just need an excuse to break out a bottle of wine and invite some friends and family over for a good time. These wine clubs are perfect for that. Not only will you all be able to enjoy some great wine but you’ll can make it a point to learn about the different flavors, vineyards, history, etc. Take it a step further and serve the wine with the food that the wine club says to pair it with to really impress your guests.

What to Consider When Choosing a Wine Club

When putting together this overview of the top wine clubs, we wanted to be as methodical as possible in our approach. We started the process by researching wine of the month clubs and narrowing down our list by the following points/questions. Feel free to review them so you can make the most informed decision possible prior to your purchase…

How Many Bottles of Wine Will You Receive?

One of the things to consider is how many bottles of wine you’ll receive with each order, plus the frequency at which they’ll be delivered. But you’ll also want to look at a couple of other factors as well. For example, is there a minimum monthly bottle threshold that the service requires? And is that going to be too much or too little wine for you?

With Firstleaf, you’ll receive an introductory order that contains six bottles of wine at a discounted cost so that they can be priced competitively. From there on out, your future boxes will also contain six bottles of wine, but at a slightly higher price. You will have the ability to choose a delivery frequency of every one month, two months or three months though to customize this to your needs. On the flip side, with Winc, they only have a three bottle minimum.

Our goal was to include services on this list that had variable plans so you could choose the amount of bottles and frequency that fit you best, rather than being locked in to one plan.

How Much Will It End Up Costing Per Bottle?

Because we all want to make sure we’re getting a great price for our wine, it’s important to look at how much the service is going to cost. Although, you don’t just want to look at the overall cost that you’re paying for each delivery. You want to figure out about how much you’re paying per bottle of wine. That’s going to help you determine whether it’s a good deal or not.

For instance, Winc orders start at three bottles per month. That costs $39 plus an additional $9 for shipping. That ends up being about $13 for each bottle of wine, although it can change based on your wine choice and local tax rates. If you opt to order four bottles of wine, they waive the shipping fee. It’s up to you to decide if that’s a reasonable price you feel good about paying, however it does seem to be the standard price for a wine club.

The per-bottle cost (including shipping) is one of the most important aspects of choosing the right service. You don’t want to get price-gouged. We included wine clubs in this list that have set per-bottle costs that are not too expensive, yet not too cheap. There’s a variety in this list for budgets of all sizes.

Do You Have to Pay for Shipping?

These days, we are all used to the Amazon Prime life of free two-day shipping. Unfortunately, not everyone offers the free shipping luxury! Before you commit to a wine club, you’ll want to take a look at their shipping costs so you know exactly how much you’ll be spending on everything.

Is shipping included, thus saving you money? Or will there be a fee you have to pay for each wine delivery you receive? And if there is a fee, is it too expensive or right on par with what you’d expect? These things are important to consider because you don’t need to break the bank just to get some great wine!

Many of the wine clubs on this list (and in general) offer free shipping at a certain threshold. Meaning, you will need to order a specific amount of wine per shipment before the free shipping kicks in.

Do They Offer the Types of Wine You Usually Like?

When choosing a wine club, you need to make sure they offer the types of wines you normally like to drink. Are you someone who typically reaches for a Merlot for a Pinot Noir? Maybe you love a Sauvignon Blanc or a Malbec? Either way, you want to check out the types of wines they offer so you know they’ll have something you’ll love.

With Firstleaf, their club’s selections are constantly changing so they can deliver plenty of variety to their customers. You can be sure of the quality though, as their selections have won over 300 awards at various competitions. VINEBOX, however, focuses on organic and biodynamic wines, which makes them stand out among other competitors who don’t offer the same.

We tried to include wine clubs that had an eclectic mix of wines so you have the ability to choose.

What Are You Looking to Get Out of the Club?

For some people, they just want an easy way to refresh their wine fridge with monthly deliveries that’ll come straight to their door. And if that’s you, then perfect! These clubs are great for that because you don’t have to worry about picking something up at your local liquor store. You can sit back and wait for deliveries to arrive so you can enjoy a nice glass of a wine on a regular basis.

However, there are some people who want more out of their wine club. Perhaps you’re merely looking for a way to expand your tastes when it comes to wine. Maybe you’re always buying the same old bottles, but you’re ready to try something different and find new favorites. A wine club is great for this because you’ll be provided with different varieties to test out.

But if you’d like to join a service that educates you on the bottles of wine you receive, you can choose one that does just that! As mentioned above, many of these clubs will include information about the wine, the vineyard, and even the winemaker with every order you receive. Plus, they’ll often provide pairing information so you can expertly match up your new bottle of a wine with your next dinner.
