7 Best Meal Delivery Services for One Person

*Updated August 2019 with the newest information on meal kits for single person households.

With so many meal delivery services available today, it can be hard to choose the one that’s going to be right for you. And it’s even more difficult when you’re looking for one that’s best suited to a single person. After all, most of the meals are designed to serve two people, while others offer family plans as well.

Fortunately, there are a few options to consider. We’re sharing the seven best meal delivery services for one person (including our favorite).

Let’s get started!

1. Dinnerly

If you’re looking for dinners that are also simple to prepare and won’t cost you a fortune, Dinnerly is a great option to consider. In fact, it’s one of our personal favorites! In an effort to make your weeknight dinners much easier, all of their recipes contain just six ingredients. That means it’s less work for you without skimping on flavor, which is the best of both worlds!

Dinnerly says their meal delivery service is the most affordable option around, as their dishes come in at just $5 per person. And based on our experience, it really is the least expensive. Whether you’re on a budget or just looking to save a few extra bucks, it’s a very affordable option. Their smallest box is the Two-Person Box, which provides two portions per recipe and three recipes per week. While you will get 2 servings of each, there’s no need to cook up the second serving right away.

You can expect to find dishes like:

  • Thai Curry Chicken Soup with Peas and Jasmine Rice
  • Creamy Linguine and Greens with Parmesan and Mascarpone
  • Sausage Pan Roast with Parmesan and Roasted Vegetables
  • Grass-Fed Cheeseburger with Macaroni Salad
  • Vegetarian Fried Rice with Edamame

2. Freshly

If cooking isn’t your thing, you’ll want to check out Freshly. Instead of sending you pre-portioned ingredients and a recipe to follow, you’ll actually get pre-made meals. All you have to do is heat them up in the microwave or oven, depending on your preference. That means you can have dinner ready in under three minutes. It doesn’t get much easier than that! Freshly is perfect for one person since each dinner is a single serving.

What’s even better is that these aren’t like the frozen meals you purchase at the grocery store. These are prepared and cooked by Freshly’s team of chefs. Then, they’re delivered fresh to you and are never frozen. The meals are also gluten-free, nutritionally balanced, packed with protein, and all-natural. They never include gluten or refined sugars in their dinners—a huge plus if you’re on a diet.

When browsing their menu, you’ll find dishes like:

  • Steak Peppercorn with Sautéed Carrots & French Green Beans
  • Baked Penne Marinara with Italian Sausage
  • Buffalo Chicken Breast with Loaded Cauliflower
  • Slow Cooked Beef Chili

3. Chef’d

*2019 Update — Chef’d has shut down their meal delivery service

What makes Chef’d different is that there’s no need to subscribe to a weekly service. While most meal delivery companies have you sign-up for weekly dinners, they don’t require that. You can actually order whenever you want and you can pack as much, or as little, meals as you’d like into your virtual shopping cart.

When your order arrives, you’ll find fresh, pre-portioned ingredients to help you whip up a delicious dinner in no time at all. They also allow for more customization, as you can choose exactly which meals you want to receive. And with plenty of meal plans to browse, you’re sure to find something that fits your dietary needs. Not only that, but they have options for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even dessert.

Chef’d teams up with a bunch of different brands to work together on their meals (examples: Wolfgang Puck, American Diabetes Association, and Atkins). With such a jam-packed menu, you may have a hard time choosing what you’ll order!

You’ll find meal options like:

  • Chicken Cauliflower Mac and Cheese
  • Chimichurri Steak
  • Bacon Wrapped Filet
  • Thai Basil Chicken Stir Fry
  • Cajun Blackened Salmon
  • Red Snapper with Tomatoes and Olives

4. PeachDish

How would you like to receive farm-fresh ingredients right on your doorstep each week? Well, that’s where PeachDish comes in!

Just like Chef’d, there’s actually no need to subscribe with this service. You can order just one box at a time, which allows you to get to know PeachDish and their meals before making any kind of commitment.

You’ll receive pre-portioned ingredients and detailed recipes to follow along with. It’ll guide you through preparing the night’s dinner with ease. And before you know it, you’ll have a delicious dinner for one on the table. Not only that, but they source all of those ingredients from farmers they know and trust, plus they have a team of award-winning chefs working alongside them.

With a rotating menu week after week, there’s always going to be plenty of variety to choose from as well.

They offer dishes such as:

  • Arroz con Pollo with Green Salad & Annatto-Citrus Vinaigrette
  • Country Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes with Roasted Broccoli & White Gravy
  • Chicken & Grits with Collard Gravy
  • Tex-Mex Black Bean Soup

5. Gobble

If gourmet meals that can be prepared in just 15 minutes sounds like it’s right up your alley, you need to check out Gobble. They’ve created simple, three-step recipes that are designed for one-pan cooking. So, not only is it easy to prepare dinner, clean-up is even faster! And what could be better than that, especially for busy weeknights?

With Gobble, you’ll receive pre-portioned ingredients to create your meal. Plus, the recipe you follow includes simple steps and pictures to guide you along the way. There’s no stress or frustration when it comes to cooking these dinners! It’s all designed to help you spend less time in the kitchen, so you can spend more time enjoying the food you’ve prepared.

On their menu, you’re going to find dishes like:

  • Grass-Fed Filet Mignon with Asparagus & Blue Cheese Butter
  • Shrimp Scampi with Cherry Tomatoes & Arugula
  • Chicken Southwestern Sedona Bowl with Chipotle Ranch Dressing
  • Pomegranate Braised Short Ribs with Root Vegetable Mash
  • Chicken and Waffles with Sautéed Spinach

6. Tovala

Tovala is a bit unlike every meal kit on this list. Why? They’re actually much more than just a meal kit, they’re a smart oven that also sends you meals that can be scanned and quickly cooked.

Tovala makes this list because they are one of the very few meal delivery companies that actually sends single person meals (not two servings like all the others). However, one of the main reasons it didn’t make our “favorite” is because you have to purchase their smart oven in order to actually buy and cook the meals. If you do end up purchasing their smart oven, their meals are incredibly easy to make. In the video above, you’ll see that all that’s needed is to scan the barcode on the meal packaging to set the oven and you’re good to go.

We loved Tovala for its convenience. Not only is the smart oven easy to use but their mobile app makes cooking even easier. For example, the app will send you a notification when your meal is completely cooked.

On their menu, you’re going to find dishes like:

  • Buffalo Chicken Meatballs with Broccoli & Cheese Sauce
  • Lemon Garlic Caper Chicken with Creamy Kale & Cauliflower Rice
  • Italian Salsa Verde Salmon with Tangy Balsamic Parmesan Broccoli
  • Indian-Style Chicken Curry with Brown Rice & Mango Chutney

7. Sun Basket

If you’ve researched meal delivery services long enough you’re more than likely going to stumble upon Sun Basket. They started out as a small niche meal delivery service focusing on high-quality ingredients and unique/healthy meals. Since their inception, they have ballooned up to the size of the “big guys” like Blue Apron and Hello Fresh. Why? Their commitment to delicious and healthy meals — it’s as simple as that.

One of the unique things about Sun Basket is that, in addition to dinners, they also offer lunch, breakfast and even snacks. Their breakfast and lunch options are “on the go” style, meaning you can make them very quickly either in the morning before work or at your office.

The reason why we included Sun Basket on this list of meal kits for single people is that their per-meal price for your first box is incredibly inexpensive when compared to other meal kits. As of writing this, you can get your first meal (with coupon) for around only $6!

On their menu, you’re going to find dishes like:

  • Chicken chile verde with tomatillos and cabbage-celery slaw
  • Orange-glazed pork and bok choy slaw over cauliflower “rice”
  • Vietnamese shaking beef with muoi tieu chanh sauce
  • Chicken and gluten-free rigatoni with pesto and bell pepper

Dan Scalco

As someone who is considered an "average" cook, I have looked far and wide for meal delivery services that will help save me time and money while still ending up with a tasty meal. In my quest, I have tested and reviewed tons of different food delivery services. I am using this site to share all of my findings with you!

  • Of the services on this list, only Munchery and Freshly actually offer options for one person looking to order meals for themselves. The others all require at least two servings, or meals for two people in order to use them. Which completely defeats the purpose of me reading this article about meals for single people, because I don’t want two servings of the same meal.

    • (I see Munchery is suspending their service Jan 22, 2019. I’ve had Freshly and enjoyed it.)

There are so many websites that claim to have a list of ‘single serving kit’s’ that aren’t. Bizarre.

I’ll tell ya what, when one of these companies gets it figured out for single servings they’ll probably become an industry leader since some of us are looking for more than fast food (single servings) or making huge portions.

I suppose the issue is the packaging / shipping would cut into profits.

    • Unfortunately, most meal kit services provide 2 servings. I tried to find meal kits that had both smaller portions and lower costs so it would be a better fit for singles looking for a meal delivery service option. Once I find more appropriate meal kits for singles, I’m going to update this article.

  • To be honest Freshly is the best option on this list. As the commenter listed before, Munchery has closed down. They’re what I used in the past but obviously not any more. It’s disheartening that none of these meal delivery companies prioritize people who live alone. I can’t afford to buy double the meals only to have them go bad. I’ve switched to Freshly recently now that they’re in my area on the east coast but I may try Go Ready Made since I’ve seen their ads recently.

  • I chatted with Freshly and learned that the size of a chicken breast is 6-7 ounces — that double what I want. What I’m looking for is 2 smaller portions two or three nights a week for 2 people. I tried two meals two nights a week for two of us with Home Chef, but that meant we split each meal and had leftovers the other two nights. If Freshly would send 1 “large” meal 2 or 3 times a week that we could split — or 4 individual small-portion meals — that would be great. But it doesn’t look they will.

  • Five of these services have minumum 2-portion meals. Munchery has now shut down, as well. So, there are really no delivery services here that are single-serving. Bummer

    • You’re right :/. Meal kits make it super hard for one-person households because almost all of them only send 2-portion meals. A lot of the pre-made meal kits (like Freshly) are great options because you don’t have to cook the second serving right away. However, if you’re looking for a one-person meal kit that isn’t pre-made, Tovala actually has one. The only reason we were hesitant to put it on this list is because you have to invest in their smart oven to cook them meals, which is a few hundred dollars.

    • Not true. Freshly delivers single-serving meals (4 to 12 per week, but all will be different unless you decide to purchase multiple of the sane type.) This article STILL needs to be updated because it contradicts itself; it says in several places that there are no meal delivery options that offer meals for singles. With Freshly, you never have leftovers go to waste or need to eat the same thing twice in the week.
